Fragments of Gold

Standing knee deep in muddy water, the old woman laughed and motioned for Stephen to come look.  Her pinky finger was extended, and on the tip was a barely-visible, glittering crumb of gold.  She was excited; her efforts had been rewarded.  Stephen, however, was inspired: if this old woman could labor day in and day out for a few small flecks of gold, gladly bearing the toil, heat, and back breaking work, how much more should we eagerly be about the Father's business of gathering the fragments of lives – soul miners rather than gold miners – laboring for the love of Christ.

When we first moved to Sierra Leone in November of 2009, our daughter asked me to keep a journal, something which I had never done before.  I was surprised at how quickly they filled up!  I now keep three separate journals: one for the lessons and insights I have gained from my years in Sierra Leone’s culture (Until the Shadows Flee Away); the second for personal lessons gained during my daily Bible reading and study (Meditations from the Morning Watch); and the third is my madcap chronicle from daily life (Letters to My Friends).  These precious insights, gleaned from the ordinary as well as the unusual events of my life as a missionary wife, are fragments of gold; treasures given from the Lord.

Now that I am Stateside due to the collapse of my health, my journals have even more meaning to me as I can look back and see how the Lord is refining my faith.  Laughter and tears, joys and fears, successes and failures, which otherwise would be forgotten or blurred by time, are kept for my learning and sharing.  And I continue to keep my journal.

Please come and join me in the journey of a soul, as together we gather Fragments of Gold.

Culture Clash — Resolved!

My crazy dogs. Mercy, my baby, is on my lap while Goodness takes his place on the floor. Date of original journal entry -- January 5, 2011 I’m sitting on the cement slab which surrounds the water tank tower, grooming a very disgruntled dog.  Mercy hates...

As a Sparrow Alone

Prologue  Stephen has always called me a bird brain.  I can only laugh and acknowledge that he’s correct; I am just a little bit obsessed with birds.  To me, they are the most marvelous of God’s creatures.  There is so much to be learned from birds, and the Lord often...

Margaret and A Lesson on Prayer

Prologue:  Enjoying God's creation while working in the garden is one of my favorite prayer times. And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray. ....

My Times Are In Thy Hand

Prologue My times are in thy hand . . . (Palms 31:15) My journal entries are written somewhat in the form of letters.  I like to think of writing to someone who isn’t sitting on the veranda with me.  This helps me to write details and little things which are...

Come Rest

Thoughts from my journal When it became clear that I needed to return to the States from Sierra Leone in June 2017, I was in the second major breakdown of my health; the first coming in 1997 when I had brain and spinal surgery for Chiari Malformation.  Both of these...

My Strong Tower

The name of the LORD is as strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. (Proverbs 18:10) For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. (Psalms 61:3) Tuesday, November 16, 2010 By the time this crater was...

Where My Treasure Is!

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth . . . but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:19-21) [caption id="attachment_1497"...

One Blood

And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth . . .  (Acts 17:26) This is one of the dearest photos to me.  There is so much more going on here than meets the eye.  Something very special between...

What is That in Thine Hand?

Just through the trees at the back of the garden, and down in a little low area, you come to my secluded prayer spot. “Oh Lord, I really need You to help me understand all of this.  How am I to serve You?  What do You...

Patient in Tribulation

Prologue: Isn’t it marvelous how the Lord has His ways of working with us?  We’re just children who don’t always get the lesson right away.  But as children, each of is us different and the Lord knows that.  He doesn’t work with me the way He might with you.  I...

Let the Good Times Roll!

Recent events regarding the Coronavirus brought back this fun memory from Sierra Leone.  Read on to find out why! ***** May, 2013 - Date of journal entry In Sierra Leone, Stephen did all of the shopping.  The 37 miles between us and the supermarket in Bo, was a brutal 4...

Keep Yourself Together!

A girl has to have color options! My Mom can fix anything with tape.  Black electrical tape, masking tape, Scotch tape, duct tape.  Of course being a nurse there’s white first-aid tape.  Her taping skills and finesse know no bounds of creativity, nor limits to pride. ...
