Fragments of Gold

Standing knee deep in muddy water, the old woman laughed and motioned for Stephen to come look.  Her pinky finger was extended, and on the tip was a barely-visible, glittering crumb of gold.  She was excited; her efforts had been rewarded.  Stephen, however, was inspired: if this old woman could labor day in and day out for a few small flecks of gold, gladly bearing the toil, heat, and back breaking work, how much more should we eagerly be about the Father's business of gathering the fragments of lives – soul miners rather than gold miners – laboring for the love of Christ.

When we first moved to Sierra Leone in November of 2009, our daughter asked me to keep a journal, something which I had never done before.  I was surprised at how quickly they filled up!  I now keep three separate journals: one for the lessons and insights I have gained from my years in Sierra Leone’s culture (Until the Shadows Flee Away); the second for personal lessons gained during my daily Bible reading and study (Meditations from the Morning Watch); and the third is my madcap chronicle from daily life (Letters to My Friends).  These precious insights, gleaned from the ordinary as well as the unusual events of my life as a missionary wife, are fragments of gold; treasures given from the Lord.

Now that I am Stateside due to the collapse of my health, my journals have even more meaning to me as I can look back and see how the Lord is refining my faith.  Laughter and tears, joys and fears, successes and failures, which otherwise would be forgotten or blurred by time, are kept for my learning and sharing.  And I continue to keep my journal.

Please come and join me in the journey of a soul, as together we gather Fragments of Gold.

Home Again

Date of original journal entry: Saturday, May 7, 2016 Yesterday afternoon, home again in Sierra Leone, I sat on my very own veranda, resting from the work of organizing and cleaning the house and unpacking my five 50-pound bags.  A stream of visitors had been drifting in and out delightfully...

See You Again

Anyone who knows me can tell you that I’m a bit of a word nerd.  I enjoy learning the history and etymology of words and just for fun will read a dictionary or thesaurus; it can be very enlightening to understand how word usages have changed over the centuries.  Often...

Not In Vain

Date of original journal entry: Wednesday March 8, 2016 Isaiah 49:4  Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God. Isaiah 49:4 has deeply struck the chord...

The Mango Tree

Prologue:  As I prepare to return to Sierra Leone from my 20 month separation from Stephen and our beloved field of service, my heart was directed to share this journal entry from nearly six years ago.  At the time of the original writing, I was struggling with cultural adjustments and...

The Accepted Time

The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.  Jeremiah 8:20 Date of original journal entry:  Friday, November 11, 2011 One of Stephen's favorites is salmon macaroni salad; this one has both cucumber and carrots making it a special treat. One mainstay...

Suffer the Little Children to Come

Mark 10:14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Children and adults alike hearing and seeing the story of Jesus...

What does the Bible say about . . . ?

Date of original journal entry:  November 2010 By faith Laura put out the benches doubting that she had sufficient charity in her heart to believe all things and hope all things. Would the ladies actually come for Bible study? The last three weeks they had not, yet when I went...

Content?

Date of original journal entry: Sunday October 31, 2010 For me, garden work is not entirely about the garden itself, though that’s a great side benefit.  It’s one of the times I most cherish for spiritual meditation, prayer, and self examination.  And readily I confess my passion for pulling weeds. ...

Absolute Surrender

Prologue The new year is a time I regularly look back through my journals and ask myself the question, “Where were you a year ago?”  Often I’m surprised by the answer to that question.  As regularly happens, my recent review took me further back in time to see the connectedness...

True Fire

Date of original journal entry: January 14, 2012 But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.  Jeremiah 20:9 Learning small nuances of our new culture can be very instructive not only...

How Beautiful The Feet

Date of original journal entry:  Wednesday, December 9, 2015 Romans 10:15 How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! Sometimes the road we have to travel is long, hot, dry, and dusty   It’s...

Hard Lessons

Date of original journal entry: Sunday, November 14, 2010 Psalm 69:20 And I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. My heart is broken and full of heaviness as the scene before me crystallizes into a lesson. A little girl,...
