Desolate in Christ

Desolate in Christ

Psalm 34:22  The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

The world is becoming ever darker and the clouds of wickedness can sometimes block my view of the Savior.  When I hear the word desolate, I think of a lonely, forlorn, bleak place in a ruinous state.  I think of sadness and abandonment.  Sometimes the world makes me feel dark, deserted, and desolate.

A peek beyond the dark clouds of earth to the coming glory of Heaven.

But in reading Psalm 34 a few days ago, I got a completely different view of this word as I realized that, in Christ, I need never feel desolate.

What a wonderfully rich word the Holy Spirit chose when He guided David to pen the single word, desolate.  Amazingly, it reveals to me many facets of my lovely Lord Jesus.  As I break down its definitions I see more of Him through the light of scripture.

  • Destitute or deprived of inhabitants:  Praise be to my Savior who made a way for heaven itself to not be deprived of human inhabitants.

“And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation” (Revelation 5:9)

  • Laid waste; in a ruinous condition:  By the unspeakable gift of God, my soul shall not be in a ruinous condition during my time on earth nor for all of eternity.

“(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:) That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.” (Psalm 49:8, 9)

  • Solitary; without companion:  How I thank the Lord Jesus that He is closer than any brother so that I need never be without companion or friend.

“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24)

  • Deprived of comfort:  How precious of my Savior to give me such a consoling promise in this dark, comfortless world.

“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” (John 14:18)

  • Deserted of God:  Ah, my soul, rejoice thee in the grand promise that thy Savior is ever with thee.

“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13:5)

Praise ye the Lord!  So much comfort from such a comfortless word!  Jesus is all of this and so much more to me, as well as to all of His dear children who trust in Him.

Some of God’s beauty we are privileged to enjoy while here on earth.
