Fragments of Gold

Standing knee deep in muddy water, the old woman laughed and motioned for Stephen to come look.  Her pinky finger was extended, and on the tip was a barely-visible, glittering crumb of gold.  She was excited; her efforts had been rewarded.  Stephen, however, was inspired: if this old woman could labor day in and day out for a few small flecks of gold, gladly bearing the toil, heat, and back breaking work, how much more should we eagerly be about the Father's business of gathering the fragments of lives – soul miners rather than gold miners – laboring for the love of Christ.

When we first moved to Sierra Leone in November of 2009, our daughter asked me to keep a journal, something which I had never done before.  I was surprised at how quickly they filled up!  I now keep three separate journals: one for the lessons and insights I have gained from my years in Sierra Leone’s culture (Until the Shadows Flee Away); the second for personal lessons gained during my daily Bible reading and study (Meditations from the Morning Watch); and the third is my madcap chronicle from daily life (Letters to My Friends).  These precious insights, gleaned from the ordinary as well as the unusual events of my life as a missionary wife, are fragments of gold; treasures given from the Lord.

Now that I am Stateside due to the collapse of my health, my journals have even more meaning to me as I can look back and see how the Lord is refining my faith.  Laughter and tears, joys and fears, successes and failures, which otherwise would be forgotten or blurred by time, are kept for my learning and sharing.  And I continue to keep my journal.

Please come and join me in the journey of a soul, as together we gather Fragments of Gold.

Of Coming to Terms

The front view of our house. Notice all the bare ground just waiting to be tracked in!   Date of original journal entry: Saturday October 30, 2010 Living between the jungle and the desert has taught me that sometimes it really is alright to compromise my...

Sorrow Not As Others Which Have No Hope

Date of original journal entry: Monday December 16, 2013 I Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. I cannot count how many times I have listened to the mournful...

Smile – The Universal Language

Date of original journal entry - April 2015 My little buddy, Caleb, with his own great smile I have admittedly had some struggles while being separated from Stephen for so long a time.  But in His graciousness, the Lord has given me countless special blessings to...

Too Much Love?

“Oh, how can you go there [Sierra Leone] and work with those children?  I would just cry; I would love them too much.”  The statement  deeply stung my heart.  The implication, though unspoken, is that I don’t love the children as much as she would -  if she were to...

The Nursery Lap

Meet Tete, a darling little imp who comes to church with her faithful mother, Kadiatu.  In Mende, Tete simply translates to “Small Girl.”  Tete is indeed a small girl but she comes with a big charm.  Before we had a formal nursery and children’s church, the toddlers and younger children...

The Life of the Flesh: Part III

Post Prologue In Part II of this series, I wrote an epilogue in which I tell about a mother who lost her life in child birth.  Pictured below is her baby daughter who is now being raised by her father’s sister, Howah.  To help baby Maria and her Auntie Howah,...

Beyond the Horizon

"And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight." (Mark 10:51) In July 2014, when we first made the decision for my return to the States, Stephen and I thought...

Im-Pressed

Date of original journal entry:  August 2010 II Corinthians … pressed out of measure Today I cleaned the cobwebs off my iron and put it in a storage bin.  Having discovered at our rented house Allen Town that a closet is a deep, dark, inviting haven for mosquitoes and –...

The Fourth Watch

Prologue The morning watch, also called the fourth watch of the night, was my husband’s favorite duty assignment during his 20 years of service in the United States Coast Guard.  He liked that it was quiet and one had time to meditate on the beauty of the ocean as it...

White Girl

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.  Sounds good but for a white girl in West Africa, the results can be a little humorous as you’ll see in these two short stories. Date of original journal entry: April 2010 It was my first day teaching a Bible class at...

Coming Rain

Date of original journal entry:  September 24, 2010 I Corinthians 3:6 -7 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.  So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. With rich soil, deep mulch, and...

The Secret Place

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1) I have always loved this portion of scripture; a tender picture of the relationship we have with the Lord as we draw near to Him and rest in His...
