Fragments of Gold

Standing knee deep in muddy water, the old woman laughed and motioned for Stephen to come look.  Her pinky finger was extended, and on the tip was a barely-visible, glittering crumb of gold.  She was excited; her efforts had been rewarded.  Stephen, however, was inspired: if this old woman could labor day in and day out for a few small flecks of gold, gladly bearing the toil, heat, and back breaking work, how much more should we eagerly be about the Father's business of gathering the fragments of lives – soul miners rather than gold miners – laboring for the love of Christ.

When we first moved to Sierra Leone in November of 2009, our daughter asked me to keep a journal, something which I had never done before.  I was surprised at how quickly they filled up!  I now keep three separate journals: one for the lessons and insights I have gained from my years in Sierra Leone’s culture (Until the Shadows Flee Away); the second for personal lessons gained during my daily Bible reading and study (Meditations from the Morning Watch); and the third is my madcap chronicle from daily life (Letters to My Friends).  These precious insights, gleaned from the ordinary as well as the unusual events of my life as a missionary wife, are fragments of gold; treasures given from the Lord.

Now that I am Stateside due to the collapse of my health, my journals have even more meaning to me as I can look back and see how the Lord is refining my faith.  Laughter and tears, joys and fears, successes and failures, which otherwise would be forgotten or blurred by time, are kept for my learning and sharing.  And I continue to keep my journal.

Please come and join me in the journey of a soul, as together we gather Fragments of Gold.

The Secret Place

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1) I have always loved this portion of scripture; a tender picture of the relationship we have with the Lord as we draw near to Him and rest in His...

Who Is Your Master?

Post Prologue When we first moved to Sierra Leone in November, 2009, we rented a home in Allen Town, a suburb of the capital city, Freetown.  Here we lived behind a 10 foot cement-block “wall fence” which had razor wire coiled on top, a large gate for the vehicle, and...

Scattered Chickens

Date of original journal entry: May 19, 2010 Though litter-mates, our dogs have very different personalities and after reading the post you'll know which is which. Mercy has gotten quite skilled at rounding up my chickens to put them in their coop just before sunset.  His patience and stealth make him...

Follow On

Date of original journal entry: September 28, 2010 Sometimes the way going isn't so smooth and clear as we might like Mark 10:32 (a) “And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they...

Confounded Language

[Original journal entry written September 23, 2012] The universal smile on some town boys willing to have their picture taken Cross-cultural ministry certainly has it’s share of blunders and bloopers.  I have unintentionally said some wrong things - and I mean really wrong.  I have neglected...

The Life of the Flesh is in the Blood: Part II

Welcome to Part II of this incredible story. (See Part I here) Some may wonder, “Why is Beatrice’s story of survival so extraordinary?” The labor and delivery room at our bush clinic. The light on the stand is battery operated. In the States, people routinely survive...

He Saw

A blessed reading this morning.  I always marvel that the Creator of the universe should care enough about speck-of-dust me that he desires to mold and make me after His image. John 9:1  And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. [caption id="attachment_665"...

The Life of the Flesh is in the Blood

Lessons from the Honey Bee

The bees had already finished their morning work by the time I snapped these cucumber blossoms Early morning garden ambling is always instructive; it’s a time I love in my cherished place.  I have two full, beautiful mounds of summer squash which are now blooming and...

The Love of God

Ah, a grand heart-enlarging lesson from the ever dear book of Ephesians.  In 3:17-19 we read of being rooted and grounded in LOVE - not knowledge. How I long to know that love and be enabled to freely display it in my life.  Love will cover the multitude of sins;...

Just Another Night in Sierra Leone

The hills at dawn Okay – I’ve said it before and undoubtedly will say it again: Stephen misses all the fun.  He’s away for a few days, I’m here alone, and inevitably something out of the ordinary happens.  Like the time four men attempted to challenge...
